Our History

Rigby Group PLC

Agility. Vision.

Rigby Group was founded in 1975 by Sir Peter Rigby, one of the UK’s most respected entrepreneurs and successful business leaders. Sir Peter’s vision and leadership have seen his initial £2,000 personal investment grow into a £4 billion multinational group of privately-owned businesses, with interests in technology, investments, and real estate.

With more than 8,500 staff and operations in nine countries, Rigby Group is a true and multi-generational family enterprise. It is one of the UK’s top ten wholly family-owned second generation businesses, and in the top 150 globally. Sir Peter remains Chairman, and operations are led by co-CEOs James and Steve Rigby.

Originally founded as Specialist Computer Recruitment (SCR), Rigby Group’s first and principal trading business, SCC, is now Europe’s largest privately owned IT services company. Having expanded nationally and internationally in the late 1970s, SCC was appointed the first IBM PC authorised dealer in 1983, becoming the UK’s leading IT reseller.

By 1990, SCC reached sales of £47 million, with investment in new services and offices, including its international headquarters, James House, in Birmingham.

Early investment in emerging technologies, enabled by SCC’s private family ownership, saw SCC become the first to attain Pan-Government Accreditation for its new Secure Multi-Tenanted Cloud service in 2012 – a major milestone in the IT industry.

Through organic and acquisitive growth, SCC has continued to invest in the latest digital transformation technologies as one of Europe’s leading solutions providers.

Rigby Technology Investments operates majority and minority investments in technology businesses; and the Group’s real estate portfolio covers airport, commercial, hospitality and residential.

Rigby Group’s charitable trust, The Rigby Foundation (registered charity no. 1011259), was founded by Sir Peter Rigby in 1992. The Rigby Foundation invests in causes relating to lifelong learning, health and education, supported by strategic guidance and oversight from senior Rigby Group executives.

In recognition of his achievements, Sir Peter Rigby was knighted in Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee Honours for services to technology and business. Twenty years later, he became the first British born businessman to receive France’s highest honour – the Legion d’honneur – for services to the French economy and promoting strong business relations between the UK and France.

Rigby Group turns 50 in 2025. All its activities continue to be underpinned by the Rigby family’s values, and by the belief that success in business must go hand-in-hand with giving back to society and communities.

“My family and myself remain committed to the Rigby Group for the long term – with technology at its heart – and maintain our core principles of hard work, entrepreneurship, good governance and philanthropy. It is an ethos I have been proud to foster throughout my business life and can assure you that this will not change as the company and its management continue to evolve.”
